The USC Energy Institute (USCEI) was launched in 2008 to create a university-based framework to support and expand opportunities in energy-related research, education, and public policy development. The Institute is a research center that solves issues related to short and long-range fuel and energy. The institute discusses topics regarding economic, environmental, and policy changes, focuses on ways to make carbon-based fuels more efficient, and works towards promoting renewable energy.

- Understanding consumer behavior
- Evaluating the impacts of climate change
- Studying environmental impacts
- Designing the Smart-Grid
